Human Endocannabinoid System:

Humans have a complex signaling system of receptors called the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and produces its own endogenous cannabinoids.  Experts are continuing to research and increase understanding of cannabinoids’ role in the human body. So far, we know it plays role in regulating a range of functions and processes, including:

  • sleep

  • mood

  • appetite

  • memory

  • reproduction and fertility

The ECS exists and is active in your body even if you don’t use cannabis. The ECS is responsible for maintaining homeostasis...that is the state of steady internal, physical, and chemical conditions maintained by humans. This is the optimal condition and includes many variables, such as body temperature, insulin production (glucose levels) and fluid balance, being kept within certain pre-set limits (homeostatic range).

Plant Cannabinoids....  what are they and what do they do?

Cannabinoid compounds are produced by the plants of the cannabis sativa variety and some are identical to the endogenous cannabinoids produced by the human ECS. The most well known compounds are Delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD).  Cannabinoids play a variety of functions in plants and have been studied for years as to their functions in humans.

CBD - Cannabidiol

There are many forms of CBD on the market including the following:

CBD Isolate

Full Spectrum CBD

Broad Spectrum CBD

What is the difference?

The difference between CBD isolate, Full spectrum CBD and Broad Spectrum relates to the contents of each form.  CBD isolate is a purified form of cannabidiol, full-spectrum CBD product contains multiple cannabis plant extracts, including essential oils, terpenes, and other cannabinoids may also contain no more than 0.3% of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the cannabinoid in the cannabis plant that produces the ‘high’ feeling in people. However, such a low amount is not strong enough to have significant psychoactive effects. Broad spectrum contains these additional compounds except THC.

The CBD extraction process is no different for each of these products, which usually involves:

  • gas (carbon dioxide) or liguid (ethanol) solvent extraction

  • distillation

  • chromatographic separation

However, CBD isolate is a much more refined product and goes through extra processing such as crystallization in a solvent such as pentane.

Full-spectrum CBD benefits

Because full-spectrum CBD contains all cannabis plant compounds, it may have a more potent effect than pure CBD. Research suggests that CBD’s health benefits may be more prominent when multiple compounds from the cannabis plant are present. This is what researchers call the ‘entourage effect.’

Another advantage of full-spectrum CBD is that it is less processed and more natural than CBD isolate.

However, people should be careful when purchasing CBD products. Items with a THC-free label may still contain traces of the compound. Thoroughly reading packaging, labels, and third-party test results will help ensure a person gets all the information they need to avoid adverse effects.
